And the journey continues with the children's book THE SUN JUMPED OVER THE MOON
Hello Everyone,
I have started doing readings in the local elementary schools for my children’s book, THE SUN JUMPED OVER THE MOON . My first reading engagement was in front of four separate classes of first graders. I have to tell you it was pretty intimidating having 20-30 first graders sprawled out in front of me - sitting crisscross applesauce - which was what we called Indian style when I was their age five decades ago.
The mornings of the reading, I woke up at 3:00 a.m. thinking: “What if the book is too long and the kids lose interest half way through the reading?” “What if I read too fast?” ( I do have a tendency to talk fast when I am exited or nervous), “What if they don’t like the story or the illustrations?” Oh boy, I have to tell you I was pretty nervous about this new adventure. But then it came to me - have the children participate in the reading. I had them tweeting like the birds, I had them rippitting like the frogs, I had them sway in the wind like the flowers. I gave them the opportunity to cheer on the Sun when it was afraid. We all had so much fun and made so much noise.
During the question and answer time after the reading, I discovered the first graders completely understood the theme of the book. When asked what their favorite part of the book was, the majority of them responded they liked that the Sun found the courage - their word, not mine, that word is not in the book- to not be afraid to jump over the moon. And they liked that the Sun’s friends were there to cheer it on to believe in itself. WOW! I was so impressed and excited.
Then they proceeded to give me a lesson on the solar system. “You know the Sun is really a star made up of many other stars.” “You know the Sun is really white even though we see it as yellow,” etc.
I did another reading at another school for Pre-K students. What they liked best about the book is the pictures and all of the characters, even the big Dark Cloud. Here I learned from 38 Pre-K kids that the Big Dark Cloud needs to come back because it give us water you know. And we need water and Sun to grow things. Yep, I heard this information 38 times from each child.
The most fun of the enter time of the event, was when I was asked by the teacher how the families could order the book. I replied that I had brought order forms for the children to take home. A little four year girl, cute as can be, informed me that they don’t take papers home, eveything is done through the internet. After which, a little boy with curly blond hair, suggested I come back to school to learn things.. I don’t think they thought I was very smart. However, I am happy to report that ALL of the children love the book. I even had another littel boy tell me that I was the best author EVER!. Don’t you just love the little ones?
If anyone has a school or group of children that would be interested in having me do a reading for Pre-K through second grade, go to my website to make a request. These readings are way too much fun to pass up.
To order an autorgaph book, please go to my webesite to place your order. I am not able to autograph books ordered on Amazon or through the publisher.
Have a great day
Lots of Hugs
